What have you tried in life that you just weren't very good at?

View 500 Answers

Skiing! I literally tumbled down the Atitash Mountains in New Hampshire once, and that's putting it nicely. No matter how many times I attempt the sport,I never seem to get any better. I really am much more of an artist than I am an athlete. It's a shame, too. Skiing in particular is a such a neat sport, but we all have our strengths and weaknesses.
Also -
Playing the guitar well, skateboarding, making fondant from scratch, creating metal sculptures (ouch!), making a fancy flash based website (any help with that would be extremely appreciated),and tons of other things.

But,it's what makes me who I am,so I can't complain. Overall,I'm satisfied with my skill set,and I'd be pretty foolish if I said I'd want to change it.

What is the most common compliment you receive?

View 500 Answers

Usually it has something to do with my smile or skin, because it tends to be really clear and my smile's generally pretty bright. Given, that took two years of braces and it probably has something to do with the fact that I use whitening tooth paste every day of my life, but still. Oh,and usually I get a lot of compliments directed toward my outfits since they tend to be this slightly peculiar mix of old elegance with an urban, casual flare that's very common now  a days, supposedly. I don't know,to be honest,it's always a bit strange when anyone compliments me too much because it leaves me with a lack of response at times. I mean, really, what can I say to someone who keeps repeating "you're so pretty, elle!" other than "thanks, you are too!" and when I do,I sound like a tool. Given,I'm not a pompous airhead. I appreciate it,and I mean, please don't misread this and think I'm trying to say everyday of my life I'm showered with compliments, because I'm not. To be honest, many of the compliments I receive often have to do with my mind. How ambitious I am,how well spoken I am,how smart I am,etc. I appreciate those more,I think. It's always nice to hear, and at least I can respond with a substantial answer to something of that sort.
I guess this makes me sound like I don't like to compliment anyone, but I really do! I rather compliment people on a talent instead, though. Their art, their penmanship, their cooking, whatever. People tend to appreciate it a bit more, since it's something their passionate about as well. Then again,I can't speak for everyone I suppose.

ps - I'm so tired right now,it's insane! I also have a strong desire to write and write and write but I'm now realizing that I'm so tired that anything that I'm typing is starting to sound like crud. Sorry.
pps- When I re-read this right after I posted it a moment ago,I realized i forgot one of the most obvious and constant compliments I recieve. "Your art/design ethic is really neat!" or something along those lines. Whoops.

G'night,

Elle

Who or what do you really love?

View 500 Answers

There's a plethora of things I really like, but a select few that I really love whole heartedly. Family and close friends, naturally. When I say close friends,I do not mean fair weather go-for-coffee bi-annually-but-don't-understand-completely-type folks. I mean like my best friend who makes sushi at 3 in the morning for me,or a friend who doesn't need to be hinted to help you in a time of need and expects nothing in return. Those, well, they're keepers. I love really smooth paint brushes and blank canvasses, medium format photos and my dad's old SLR's. I love music. The way it can alter my mood, how it's brought me to so many places around the globe, and the people it's allowed me to meet. I love my grandma's pasta "gravy" and napoleon pastries from Europa in Brooklyn on 65th Street (though I think I liked it better before it became a restaurant, too). I love elegant dresses and jewelery, portobello road in london, and westminister street in providence. I love black coffee that's sweet and food that's (very) spicy, not to mention anything my godmother cooks in her kitchen (so long as it's meat-free).

And really, other than that,I like everything else very much or not at all.

Who is your favorite artist?

View 282 Answers

In short,Roy Lichtenstein! I was first introduced to his work in person in Nashville,TN. I took a bus in from gaylord opryland on a saturday morning, jumped off at what I assumed was the right stop, and walked around this foreign town by myself at the ripe old age of fifteen. With film SLR in hand,I walked by a japanese convention, through a crowd of tourists, and finally made it to this neat art deco-esque building. It was called the Frist, and though the exhibit wasn't the biggest I've ever seen,I immediately fell in love with it. Full of pop and modern art masterpieces,I spent most of my day there. I had heard of Roy many times before,I am a visual arts "major" after all, but something about his work in person,to see all of the intricate details so close up,was absolutely striking. Since then,I've seen his works displayed everywhere from Chicago to the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and he continues to inspire me and my work daily. Maybe it's because his work was so closely tied to advertising and I want to become an art director,or maybe it's because of his techniques and bold style..I'm not quite sure myself, really. But in short,he's my favorite.

When did you stop believing in Santa Claus and why?

Let me pre-empt this by saying that my parents are a little eccentric, but in the most heart-warmingly of ways.
But,to get to the point, one year (I was three or four I think, probably four) my dad decided to dress up as a mish-mosh santa clause.
He had the outfit down, but I wasn't any fool! The minute my mom opened the door, gasped in that very surprised way,and said "Marielle! Look! It's Santa! It's Santa Claus! Yayyy!" I said "That's not santa! That's daddy santa!" and I went up to my dad and gave him a big hug. Only long enough for me to grab the big bag/sack full of presents, though! ;) A few days later i said,"Mom,Santa isn't real is he? You lied!" but I was actually laughing about it,since Santa always seemed like a pretty silly idea to me. There was no crying or anything. As long as there was presents and food,it was all good. ESPECIALLY since after that year I had more control over present-choice. I'd like to think I was a pretty savvy toddler, heh.

What was the first band you became a fan of?

The first band I believe I ever really became infatuated with on my own,not thanks to my parents or my friends, was the Killers.
Something about their swagger really hit me,not in a dramatic way, just more that they were from Vegas out of all places, sounded British, and wore Dior. Something about the combination seemed strange, and I probably spent the next year or so of my very young adolescent life researching everything I could about them. At first it was very cliche, saying I "love brandon flowers!" and things of the sort, but it actually was the first time I ever started to delve into the music industry.
Now,for a young girl living in Rhode Island,NME was foreign to me,I'd never heard of Radio 1,or attended a real indie rock show before. It's also safe to say no one in my middle school had, either. But,within a few months I was up to speed on all the latest music coming out from the UK and everywhere, really.Or so I thought, heh. Anyway, this turned into me learning more about music labels, which eventually led me to my interest in music journalism and interviewing almost all of my favorite acts, and now to the present time where I could see myself spending the rest of my life as an Art Director for a label,as visual art is my first passion.
I'm taking the right steps forward, with internships and whatnot, and it might be a little unfair to attribute all of this to those "somebody told me" guys, but in a strange way,I do.

Hi everyone,

Somehow you've stumbled upon this page,so I might as well say a little bit about myself,as this is my first entry on this blog. Not to say I haven't had a blog before. I've had quite a few, actually. you can pretty much read all about my adolescent years to present from youngest to most present at the blogs listed below -

www.livejournal.com/users/amazinglyelle
www.livejournal.com/users/_englishhearts
everydayelle.blogspot.com
eloquentelle.blogspot.com
and finally,here

Why so many? I'm not sure. Being the juvenile I am,it could possibly be that I like fresh sarts once in a while,as if a blank journal is a blank slate. Now,I know that's not reality, but it's a nice thought I guess. Not to say that I don't indulge in reading the oldest journal sometime for kicks. Oh,childhood.

This journal will probably be friends only with a fairly easy acceptance policy. I just like to know who's reading is all.
I guess I'll say this,if you'd like to be added, just leave a short little comment with, and let me bold this in a new line for all of those who won't read this entire entry and are explicitly lazy --

To be added, leave your name, what country you're from, and your favorite thing in the world.

Short and simple, but it says a lot about a person.

Bonsoir!,
Elle
